Creative Writing

I see dark and light green trees near big tall mountains, which is standing over the cold blue sea.
As i swept my eyes across, I see a big cold blue sea , with boats floating on top of the sea.
On the bottom of the mountain I can see boats floating around, I can also see some coming at me.
As i look up into the air, I can see the light blue sky, and I can feel the nice cold breeze touching my back.

My name is Jedi, I love coming here every weekend. I love going new places, and also finding out new things about those places. But , my favourite place of all is here, because it helps me relax, and I love the breeze here. Sometimes, when I'm in the mood, I go for a swim, in the sea. I loved living here, near the big tall mountains, the big cold blue sea, and the green trees, I couldn't ask for anything than to stay here.

My family doesn't like big tall mountains, or the big blue sea, or even beautiful green trees, like I do.
My family thinks that instead of going to see beautiful scenery very weekend, they want me to stay home, because they think something dangerous might happen out there. They still couldn't forget about last year, we all know that last year was very horrifying, because during last year, there was an unexpected tsunami that happened here. There weren't much people who lived around here when it happened, it felt like it was only us. My parents were very protective and strict parents, so they usually wouldn't let me go there, but I would pretend they didn't say anything to me, and just walk straight out the door, and walk to the beach.

One Saturday afternoon, my 7 year old litter sister Lucy, who is obsessed with turtles, when she was 3. She has always wanted a pet turtle, and my parents also wanted her to have a turtle, because she will always beg for one everyday. So this Saturday afternoon, we looked out the window, and saw a man holding a cage, and inside it was a small baby turtle, upon seeing this, my sister started screaming for my mom, " MOM! MOM!, ITS A TURTLE!" , my mum came running to our room, " What is it Lucy?", " Mum, I want that turtle!!", My mom was very happy to see a turtle, but she thought that the turtle already had an owner. We saw the man walking towards the beach, holding the cage, and since my litter sister wanted to have that turtle, we quickly ran out of the house, with my mum following us. When we got to the beach, and to our surprise, there were 8 in total little turtles on the sand, my sister started jumping up and down with joy, and from that day on, my parents let us go to the beach everyday.

In CIP last week, we were doing a sheet activity. We had to pick a celebrity or other famous people who you think helps change the world or maybe doing kind things for others. I picked Ellen DeGeneres because Ellen DeGeneres is one of my favorite persons around the world. She is a American Comedian, Television Host, Actress, Writer and Producer. Ellen DeGeneres is a very funny, talented and always a kind person. Ellen inspires others to always be kind to one another. I really like watching some of Ellen's videos, and also watching her TV show.

Digital Technology Hurumanu

In Digital Tech 7/8 Tz and Bh have been working in groups, or working individually. Our group members, Paige, Hamid, Charlie, Shanarnia and I have been creating a maze. Our topic is Pollution and so all of us decided to create a map, with birds somewhere in the maze and we are going to be using the Sphero, and it has to go through the maze and help all the birds in our maze that we have created. The reason why we have chose Pollution is because, Pollution is one of the major environmental problems in New Zealand. And more than 2 million children under the age of 5 die every day due to pollution.
So that is why we are encouraging others to stop littering, because it is not good for the environment and it can lead to Air Pollution which is sometimes dangerous for humans.

For our maze we drew bushes around the maze, and added birds somewhere in the maze, so when the Sphero goes around the maze it can collect it, so it's basically just playing Pacman. Then we colored the bushes in green. After doing that, we then started to draw lines for the maze, we made sure there were birds somewhere in the maze, so it can collect the birds.

PE Hurumanu

In PE hurumanu we have teams and each team had a sports they were gonna teach the class. My team is sticky rice. Our team chose soccer because soccer is one of the popular sports and it's also a fun sports to play with others. In my opinion our lesson was very successful because all our group members helped do something and made it easier and faster to play the game. My role was helping others in my team with the warm ups and also getting the students into a group, so all groups are even. The thing that I think we would do different next time is maybe the drill, because not everyone was doing the drill properly.

The things I learnt about soccer was to always share the ball with others, and spreading out and not just always going where the ball is, and also working together as a team to get the ball in the goal. One thing I liked about this hurumanu is how we get to play different kinds of sports and how we are always competitive, and just always having fun.

Orana Wildlife Park

On Monday year Bh & Tz went on a school trip to Orana Wildlife Park. We all met at the learning commons, and all of us got a name tag and a number 1 or 2. While waiting for the bus to come, we had morning tea. When the bus finally came, we all went walked out and dropped our bags into the white van, then walked to the bus. On our way to Orana Park, we went down a hill, and we were screaming loud because we got so scared. When we finally got to Orana Park I felt excited to see all the animals, especially feeding the giraffes. At Orana Park we split into 2 big groups. Our group first saw the Meerkats. The Meerkats  were so adorable, unfortunately they cannot be kept as pets. We went into the reptiles room, and saw the frogs, geckos and lizards.

We also went and looked at the lions, my favorite part was hearing the lions roar at each other. The lions roared so loud that Shanarnia, Paige and I got scared. I also liked going into the bird aviary, and also learning about birds.

Finally we had lunch, and after lunch we took a big group photo.
My two favorite animals we saw was the Kiwi because you had to spot where the Kiwi was.  I really enjoyed looking at the gorillas.
Finally my favorite part of the day was feeding the giraffes.
I got a little scared and nervous, so i just gave my branch to Paige, and i watched her.
But at the end of the day i had lots of fun, and got to see lots of animals and learn some things about different animals.

PE Hurumanu

Hello there!
Last week on Monday and Thursday we had PE Hurumanu, and In PE we done some maths, In maths we got into our groups and we done some maths things, It was kinda hard working some things out, but we helped each other out and worked as a team. On Monday we played bench ball which was been taught by French fries, ( Which is a team name). I was really excited that we were going to play bench ball, because bench ball was one of my favorite games to play, especially when classes were going to verse each other. But before we got into playing the game, we had to do some warm ups, our warm ups was 40 star jumps, 20 high knees, sprints, and our drill was sneak up on granny. After playing a few rounds of sneak up on granny, we then started playing bench ball. Our teams were year Tz vs year 7 Bh, and year 8 Tz verse year 8 Bh. I really enjoyed playing the game, and everyone in each group worked as a team, and gave it a try, and everyone was just having fun. After lunch we had one more game of bench ball with our same teams. Finally, my favorite part was when the year 7 vs the year 8. I found it very competitive and also fun, because some year 7 had skills, and also other year 8. I am very happy to say that the year 8 won, but the year 7 tried their best, and did very well, but overall everyone had fun.
In PE I worked successfully with my  them and so did they, by helping each other out and saying positive things to each other.

Recycling stationery

In our CIP class, we have been organizing a recycling programme, where year 7 and 8 classes will be collecting stationery. We are going to be spreading our message to the community by sharing it with people, so they can help us collect some stationery. The whole school will be involved in this programme. I think that by everyone helping, I really think we will be able to collect 20 kg. When we get some money back from Terracycle, I think we should give some to charity.

Reading Theater

At the start of this term we have been doing Reading Theater which is when we create a play. This term Paige, Narnia , Haylee, Shalizeh, Meleana And I wrote a play together which was called The Kidnapping Witch. Our play is about 4 girls who had a sleepover and one of the girls house, and there were no adults, suddenly a witch comes and kidnaps them, and how they get away from the witch. Even tho our play didn't have a proper solution about our problem, it still was a cool play.

Rugby

In Cip i have watched a video which is about a girl named Zara Barrett. Zara Barrett is 16 years old, she has a great personality, a very fun and kind girl. Zara has down syndrome, down syndrome is a condition in which a person is born with an extra chromosome, with down syndrome, the extra chromosome causes delays in the way a child develops, mentally and physically. Although Zara suffers from down syndrome, she feels she is no different from others, because she loves life and she loves her brothers. Speaking of brothers, Zara Barrett has 3 brothers who are in the All Blacks rugby team, and they are Beauden, Jordie and Scott Barrett. While watching this, I learnt that Zara Barrett, like most people with Down Syndrome, faces challenges with her speech, but being part of a big and loving family has really helped Zara improve. Her brothers are very kind and happy towards Zara, they treat her normal, Zara's brothers really believe that inclusiveness is a massive thing for any Down Syndrome person in New Zealand. I think this is helping spread kindness because i feel like everyone needs to feel loved and included, no matter what their appearance are or what they have, it is important to include them and spread kindness around.

Digital Tech Hurumanu

For the last 3 weeks we have been doing Digital Tech Hurumanu, with 7/8 Bh. Mr carter, Miss Tozer & Mr Richardson are our teachers for this hurumanu. We watched some clips as a class, and then on our drive we had to complete our individual learning log, which is where we had to write down our thought for each category. There were 3 categories,  Social, Environmental & Ethical. After watching clips about those three things we had to just write down some things about what we knew or learnt about them. After doing that, we then had to brainstorm an issue we are interested about.
  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1eDnhJW2zqFRizODOsfEST0-wyc60bntcHpnxx--Q3AI/edit

The issue i am interested in was Air pollution because Air pollution has been discovered in a few years earlier in 1948, and there is lots of pollution in the air, and i think we should do something about that because some people can get long-term health effects from air pollution, including lung cancer, heart disease. Not only that but air pollution can also cause long-term damage to peoples nerves, brain, kidneys, liver and other organs.

After that, moving onto our Research / Inquiry Template, where we had to complete the template about the issue we were interested in and add links to videos or websites explaining some things about your issue.

Hurumanu - Climate Change

Aim: To look at the causes of climate change and how to prevent it.

As you watch the video answer these questions:

What is our greatest threat in thousands of years?
- Climate Change

How do we see climate change affecting the globe?
  1.  Floods
  2.   Winds
  3.   Storms
  4.    Heat Waves

What is needed to change history?
- Take Action

Is climate change a man made disaster?
- Yes, because we are burning fossil fuels

Dramatic action must be made in the next ten years to change it?

Why is our climate changing?
- Because of one simple fact = Our world is getting hotter

What is causing the warming trend of the climate?
- Human Activities

What is the main problem?
- We are all using energy all the time and in the industrial world that energy is almost entirely fossil fuels

What are examples of these?

Burning fossil fuels releases what gas?
- Carbon Dioxide

How much hotter now is our world?
- Over 400

What do we call this global warming?

How is this affecting creatures / animals like bats?
- The heat

What percentage of species are near extinction?
- Some animals are not use to the climate change changing

How could this effect the world ecosystems?
- 8 Percent

What global change was seen and recording breaking last year?
- Wildfire

How is climate change affecting our weather systems?
The amount of water vapor in the atmosphere has in fact increased due to human- caused warming

- This extra moisture is available to storm systems & heavier rainfalls.

 1.  Evaporating of the oceans
2.  When there is no moisture in the air, your gonna get more rain
3.  With a degree Celsius of warming, there is no moisture

What is another effect of climate change?
- As the climate change warms, it changes the nature of global rainfall, evaporation, snow, stream flow and other factors that affect water supply and quality.

What will happen if the ice melts in Antarctica and the Arctic?
- If the Antarctic ice melted, sea levels around the world rise above 61 meters
(200 Feet). But the average temperature in Antarctica is - 37 Celsius, so the ice there is in no danger of melting.

How does this affect people?

What other things affect oceans change?
          - Due to climate change, as the ocean gets warmer, this too has an effect on the                                                                   seafloor.

What does to much heat do to coral?
- Rising ocean temperatures can kill corals. Humans pumping more and more       greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and that is trapping excess heat and causing the surface of the planet to warm.

Why did some industries not want to stop burning fossil fuels?

Stop at 23.39

Investigation

You can decide on how you would like to do this investigation. Your presentation could be on the blog, slides, or Powerpoint.

Write a definition, upload an image and list where these fossil fuels are mined.

  1. Coal
  2. Oil
  3. Natural Gas

- Coal is a hard rock which can be burned as a solid fossil fuel

- A viscous liquid derived from petroleum, especially for use as fuel or lubricant.

- Flammable gas, consisting largely of methane and other hydrocarbons, occurring naturally underground

Write a paragraph and upload an image about each of these renewable energy.

  1. Solar
  2. Wind
  3. Waves
  4. Hydro

Solar energy is radiant light and heat from the sun, energy is the ability to do work, and "solar" is a Latin word for the sun. So, we can define solar energy as energy obtained from the sun, we can put this energy to work for us in many ways, from heating water and living spaces within our homes to generating electrical energy. Wind energy is an electrical energy obtained fro  m harnessing the wind with windmills or wind turbines. Wave energy, aka ocean energy or sea wave energy, is energy harnessed from the ocean or sea waves... Exactly, waves are created by the wind that passes over the oceans surface. Flowing water creates, energy that can be captured and turned into electricity, this is called hydroelectric power or hydro power. The most common type of hydroelectric power plant uses a dam on a river to store water in a reservoir.

China is the world leader in wind power generation

The National Energy Board of Canada expects that by 2040, solar power will generate 1.2% of the country's electricity while wind will provide 9.5%.

= Hydroelectricity is the largest renewable energy source in Canada, approximately 60 percent of Canada's electricity generation.

Write a 6 sentence reflection about what you have learnt about Climate Change and how it is going to affect us.

In science Hurumanu we watched a facts video about climate change and while watching the video, we had to try and answer some questions based on climate change. I learnt some new things about climate change that i didn't know before. First of all I learnt that our climate is changing, simply because our world is getting hotter. I also learnt that the main problem is that we are all using energy all the time and in the industrial world that energy is almost entirely fossil fuels. I think climate change is going to affect peoples lives and health which I hope not, the reason why I think this is because according to World Health Organization, Air pollution kills an estimated 7 million people worldwide every year.

Investigation.

What is biomass?
Biomass is a renewable energy source because we can always grow more trees and crops, and waste will always exist. Some examples of biomass fuels are wood, crops, manure, and some garbage. When burned, the chemical energy in biomass is released as heat.
What are the 5 types of biomass?

  1.  Garbage
  2.  Wood
  3.  Alcohol Fuels
  4.  Crops
  5.  Landfill
What are three benefits of biomass?
  1.   It is less expensive than fossil fuels.
  2.  It reduces the over reliance of fossil fuels.
  3.  Biomass is always and widely available as a renewable source of energy.
What are three disadvantages of biomass?
  1.    Biomass energy Can lead to deforestation.
  2.   Biomass plants require a lot of space.
  3.   Biomass energy is not as efficient as fossil fuels.

Research the following types of Biomass.
You will need to:
Write a definition of the each fuel.
Answer each question
  • How is it made?
  • What is it used for?
  • Where is it made?
  • What is it made with?
  • What countries use it?
Place 2 images of the fuel.
