What is biomass?
Biomass is a renewable energy source because we can always grow more trees and crops, and waste will always exist. Some examples of biomass fuels are wood, crops, manure, and some garbage. When burned, the chemical energy in biomass is released as heat.

    4. How is this resource recycled?
         Paper recycling mostly involves used/old paper     with water and chemicals to break it down. Then    the paper is chopped up and heated, which then the paper breaks down even more into strands of             cellulose. Cellulose is a type of organic plant material, this mixture is called pulp. 

    Leaves:

                      Chlorophyll is the molecule in leaves that uses the energy in sunlight to turn water (H2O) and carbon dioxide gas (CO2) into sugar and oxygen gas (O2).

    3. How does making this object contribute to climate change?   
                  High CO2 levels cause plants to thicken their leaves, which could worsen climate change effects. 

    4.How is this resource recycled?
    Mulch Mowing 
    The easiest way to recycle fallen leaves is to simply leave them where them alone. Up to an inch or two of leaves can be mowed and left to break down in your lawn. That way it is adding nutrients and a bit of mulch to your lawn grass

    Mulch:

    Material (such as decaying leaves, bark, or compost) spread around or over a plant to enrich or insulate the soil.

    Glass Bottles:

          Glass is made of abundant natural raw material such as sand and glass waste (cullet)
       3. How does making this object contribute to climate change?   
                      Recycling glass bottles is really good for the environment because it can save a lot of the energy used in the manufacturing process of glass from raw materials. And there are also applications which can turn waste glass into building materials, concrete, and paving applications, in place of sand and other natural resources. 

     4. How is this resource recycled?
      A consumer throws glass into a recycle bin,then glass is taken from the recycle bin and will be taken to a glass treatment plant. The glass will then be sorted by color and washed to remove any impurities. The glass will then be crushed and will be melted, and is then moulded into new products such as bottles and jars.

    Plastic Bottles:

                      Polyethylene
        3. How does making this object contribute to climate change?   80% of plastic water bottles end up in landfills, each bottle leaks harmful chemicals into our environment along the way as it decomposes. 

    4. How is this resource recycled?
     1. First they check the bottom of the bottle 
     2. Take the cap off
     3. Rinse the plastic bottle with water
     4. Remove the label and plastic seal if necessary
     5. Then with the other bottles..repeat the process
     6. Consider crushing the bottles if there is a lot
     7. Put the bottles into the bag.


    Styrofoam:
    1. How long does this resource take to decompose?
                         Never?
          2. What resource / fossil fuel are they made from?
           Styrofoam is a type of plastic product, so it is petroleum based meaning it is made from oil.
       
    3. How does making this object contribute to climate change?     When Styrofoam is burnt for energy or for disposal, it is released into the environment, leading to air pollution and health problems when inhaled by people and animals.

    4. How is this resource recycled?

    Doughnut Art Project

    During this term in our art hurumanu every group had to make a story using clay or drawing their story on whiteboards. My group members Elisha- Mae and Charlie have been doing our doughnut art project. We first had to make a plan on what our story was gonna be about. All the groups had to make stories relating to manakitanga, so Elisha- Mae and I decided to make a story about kindness. We first had to draw what our characters looked like and draw what was happening in our story. For two weeks our group had to think of ideas, our characters, and also draw our story step by step. Our story is about a father and a daughter who go to the doughnut shop to buy the daughter a doughnut on her birthday, but sadly the father didn't have enough money to pay for the doughnut,the daughter then gets very angry and sad, but someone overheard them talking about not having enough money, and that person was also sad about this, so she decided to help them out.

    The next week, our whole hurumanu class had to do some writing and making our characters with either clay or drawing our characters on the whiteboards. Some people were working on writing with Miss Birtch, while the rest were making their characters with Miss Kein and Whaea Rowina.
    For the writing part we had to write our whole story on google docs, after writing down our whole story and adding all our punctuation's in the story and also adding adjective words to make the story interesting. Then we had to do some highlighting, Miss Birtch wrote down , when, what, where and our characters, and in our story we wrote we had to highlight some parts of our story about when did it happen, what happened in the story, where did it take place, and who are the characters. Miss birtch gave each "W" a different color so we know what parts to highlight.

    After maybe 2 weeks of making characters and writing our stories, our group finally were onto the filming part. For filming we went into the breakout space and filmed our video. We looked for some little props we needed for the video. Filming was my favorite part, Elisha- Mae was so kind that she edited our video at home during the weekends.

    Mufti Day

    Last Wednesday for CIP, We have been planning about having a mufti day on Thursday the 8th of August. First we had to think of a mufti day theme, so the whole class got into groups and thought of some theme ideas for mufti day. We then shared all ideas together and Miss Birtch wrote all the ideas on the board. The reason why we are having a mufti day is because we are trying to raise some money for kids can. KidsCan is a charitable trust, Kids can works together to help New Zealand kids who are living in poverty through heaps of programmes. They kindly provide gears, like socks, shoes, raincoats and also food. So we are helping KidsCan by raising money for them, so they can help out New Zealand kids. Our theme for mufti day is a Radical Rainbow theme, I hope everyone can come dressed in rainbow colors or get with a bunch of friends and make the colors of the rainbow, and also bring along a gold coin donation, since we are raising money for KidsCan, that way it will become a very successful mufti day. We are trying to spread kindness by showing others that people who do very kind things will get things back.

    Wind speed - Making an anemometer.


    MATERIALS

    1. 4 STRAWS 

     2.  4 CUPS

    3. PIN

    4. PENCIL

    5. TAPE

    STEPS  

    1.  Step one is to get your cups and poke a hole on the top side of your cup and make it go through on each cup. 
    2.  Then get your four straws to take two and connect it together then tape it after doing that do that with the other two.
    3. After taping each straw together and make a plus. 
    4. Then get you to pin and pin it in the middle of the plus.
    5. Then stick the straws where you poke the hole on the cups.
    6. The last step is to tape the pencil to the middle of the plus/cross.  It will hopefully look like this.


    Once you have made an anemometer we are going to record the wind speed.

    You will need:

    Anemometer (above) 

    Roles:


    • Timekeeper -Risha 
    • Counter-Sahara
    • Recorder- Rarotonga 
    • Anemometer Manager - Nevaeh
    • Wind generator- Heat pump, Human breathe slowly, outside, Human breathe fast
    1. Mount the anemometer in a place that has full access to the wind from all directions.
    2. When the timekeeper says "Go", the counter in each group will count how many times the marked cup passes them in one minute and write it down.
    3. If possible, repeat the above step four (4) times and record the average number of spins on the chart.

    FINDINGS

    • Record how many times it spins using the table below.
    You will need to create the wind yourself by blowing. Get 4 different wind speeds by blowing.

    You will need to time them and count the number of spins.

    CONCLUSION:

    The fast breath was very fast
    and outside was very slow because there was no wind

    Amazing Art

    This term 7 & 8 tz and bh have been doing art Hururmanu which we started last term. This week our group have been starting to do our film using stop motion. Our group have been making our characters out of clay and Miss Keins has been helping us make our characters. We first started doing our plans and come up with a story about manakitanga, our group chose to use clay. Elisha Mae and I stared to work on drawing our character and how they would look and dressed. Then we thought about how our donut shop would look like inside and outside, Elisha Mae and I decided to just make a ordinary donut shop and we named it dunkin doughnut. To make our dunk''in doughnut shop we used cardboard and we drawed some donuts are drawed what the inside of the donut shop would look like, then I painted it.

    Once we finished making our characters and making our dunk'in doughnut shop, we then started doing our film using stop motion.
